Recently observed conversation between Rebecca and Cindy (paraphrased)

C: So, do you like your new Blackbery Curve?
R: Yeah, it’s better than the Balckberry Pearl.
C: Really?
R: Yeah, the only thing is.. the Pearl was more sheek.
C: Sheek, huh?
R: Yeah, sheek…you know…
C (as she forwards the conversation to Derrick via gtalk): uhm.. ok..

hahahahahahaha.

US vs. China Olympic Basketball

LeBron dunks in US/China Olympic opener

LeBron dunks in US/China Olympic opener

Did anyone watch the US/China Olympic basketball opener?  It was entertaining… but the thing that bothers me the most is… China needs to freaking get a new font.  They’ve used the same DOS system font since WWII.  I think it’s time we introduced them to a little Times New Roman or Arial.   I mean.. those are the defaults for everything.  I feel like they have to put in an extra effort to get that crappy font that they use.. its like an eyesore next to the US jerseys.

…esta malo

4 08 2008

I went to see my elementary school in maryland with sarah.  we drove around the school a bit and everything looked a lot smaller than I remembered.

we pulled up to the front of the school and tried to look in.  a sign on the front door stated:

“now undergoing asbestos project”

I said aloud, “what the heck?!”

Sarah said “I KNOW!  Why the heck is everything in Spanish?!”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

“aiiiee!! los asbestos! esta malo!”

this is my last dinner without Sarah.. The worst part of it was, not only was I eating by myself.. I was eating at a BUFFET by myself.. hahahaha

AND.. they were closing up so I only managed a bowl of pho and some buffet line food, but they wouldn’t make me any stuff on the grill and people were cleaning up all around me and I was eating alone watching a movie on my iPod.

how sad am i?  at least Sarah is coming back today.

Wilmington, 7/27/08

28 07 2008

Went out to Wilmington with Sarah for an evening…

We stopped by Grand Asia and got a few bites of Chinese food before heading down to the end of I-40.  We had a late dinner by the river in Downtown Wilmington at the Union Cafe.  They have these mini-decks each with their own door and and a small 2-person table that hang outside the second floor of the building that you get a great view of Market Street and the river.  It was a little muggy, but it was kind of a cool experience.  A little pricey, but nice.  She had a Calamari Salad which was pretty good and I had the Shrimp and Grits, and they gave me 8 big shrimp in it, so it was definitely good.. a little mushy though (the food, not this post).

I drove back this morning which was nice, too, because I got to listen to some sermons and I got really excited about some stuff which I’ll share with you in person if I get the chance.  It was weird because my heart was beating all fast and I found myself singing out loud by myself as the sermon was still going on (and subsequently got a little lost on what he was talking about when I finished my song).  I was randomly singing songs that I thought tied in really well to the concept he was talking about at that moment, but it happened probably 5 times over the course of my drive back to Durham.

When I finished three of the sermons, I felt like I had to pump all of the worship anthems that are great to just sing out loud by yourself in the car.  I probably should have opened the windows so the wind could blow through my hair and I’d REALLY feel like a rock star.. hahahaha

Anyway, I thought a lot about how praise at our church goes, and it made me kinda sad that the team (and more specifically, I) wasn’t doing enough to really get people as… involved or focused where we’re just so excited about God’s sovereignty and grace that our heart is just beating and beating.  I mean, I’m not trying to be completely emo about it.. cuz, if you and I have even a conversational relationship, I’m not really that into being wrapped up in emotion.. but it was a really interesting and .. maybe, powerful?.. experience driving by myself.  I think I’ll start writing some of my thoughts on praise stuff or any other church-related things if I get a chance to collect it all well enough to put it on digital “paper”.

ok.. i’ll compose myself and try and be “generally stoic but sometimes strangely awkward” Derrick… peace out..

hahahaha

…Part of the Whole Game

28 07 2008

spoke with Sarah about the ordeal with Rebecca and all 13 innings of baseball.  Sarah said something along these lines before I got to the punchline of my story..

“…hahaha.. she didnt know there were 7 innings?? hahaha”

mm… blessed to have caught THIS one EARLY!

hahahahaha!

The Whole Game…

21 07 2008

Had a nice conversation last night with Jennie Lee, Yooni, and Rebecca.

Jennie: I like watching soccer when the guys I know on the Duke team are playing.  But football is hard to watch cuz everyone’s wearing helmets and its hard to recognize people unless you know their numbers.
Rebecca:  I don’t like watching soccer that much, it gets kinda boring.
Derrick: Yeah, watching sports that you don’t know the rules to can be boring.
Rebecca: Yeah, I can watch football, but soccer is kinda tough.. and BASEBALL.. i can’t sit through all 13 innings
Derrick:  …. uhhh …. 9 innings?
Rebecca: oh my goodness [covering face in embarrassment]
Derrick: definite blog material
Rebecca: nooooo!!

hahahahaha…. 13 innings… and she said it so “knowingly”.. hahahahaha
